The Wests Roosters threw the 2012 Swindale Shield wide open on Saturday by upsetting defending first round champions Northern United 27-11 at Ian Galloway Park.
What happened: Wests Roosters produced a gutsy team performance which dominated Northern United in almost every phase of the game. Bolstered by the return of Hurricanes openside flanker Scott Fuglistaller Wests played with an audacity and hunger that Norths failed to counter. Fuglistaller and livewire No8 Blade Thompson were influential in helping their forward pack gain ascendancy over the bigger Norths forwards. In the Wests backline, halfback Nalu Tuigamala was a powerhouse and Steve Johnson was incisive from fullback. Norths were not allowed to get their machine going at any stage and they will be gutted at their uncharacteristic lack of urgency.
The big play: Wests flanker Rolagi Lepupa scored close to the posts after great leadup work from the Wests forward pack. His try created a buffer for Wests that forced Norths into playing risky catch-up rugby that never paid off.
Star turn: Scott Fuglistaller played a talismanic role in leading a resurgent Wests outfit. His experience and overall workrate lifted a team that is steadily growing in confidence. Fuglistaller was at the forefront of everything with his intelligent all-round play.
